چکیده

The Primitive Equations of the ocean and the atmosphere are fundamental equations of geophysical fluid mechanics [10,15]. In the presence of viscosity, it has been shown—in various contexts—that these equations are well-posed (see e.g., [7,8], and the review article [14]). In the absence of viscosity, it is known that the PEs are not wellposed for any set of boundary conditions of local type. This difficulty is analyzed in [9] using a modal analysis in the vertical direction (see also [13]). To overcome this difficulty a modification of the PEs was proposed in [13], for which a set of local boundary conditions also given in [13] produces a decay of energy (in the absence of forcing), an important positive step in proving well-posedness. The modified PEs introduced in [13] contain an added friction term δw in the hydrostatic equation, so that the model is actually nonhydrostatic; we will call this system the δ-PEs equations.

A New Fuzzy Sliding Mode Controller with Auto-Adjustable Saturation Boundary Layers Implemented on Vehicle Suspension

This study develops a fuzzy sliding mode controller (FSMC) based on a variable boundary layer. A fuzzy inference mechanism is used to on-line tune the thickness of the boundary layers of the controller. Minimum rule base has been used for the fuzzy inference system which results in low calculation effort. The aim of this paper is to design a controller which will eliminate the chattering of FSM...

A Mathematical Model for Indian Ocean Circulation in Spherical Coordinate

In recent years, the Indian Ocean (IO) has been discovered to have a much larger impact on climate variability than previously thought. This paper reviews processes in which the IO is, or appears to be, actively involved. We begin the mathematical model with a pattern for summer monsoon winds. Three dimensional temperature and velocity fields are calculated analytically for the ocean forced by ...

The Coupled Boundary Layers and Air–sea Transfer Experiment in Low Winds

T he need to better understand and model the interdependence of the ocean and atmosphere has long been recognized in the climate and weather communities. Work has been carried out to investigate how the upper ocean responds to the atmosphere, leading to 1D models of the upper-ocean response to the atmosphere (e.g., Kraus and Turner 1967; Price et al. 1986), and more recently to fully three-dime...

Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Modeling of the Coastal Zone

The primary scientific objectives of the proposed research are to use a coupled atmosphere--ocean model to investigate and quantify the interaction between the oceanic and atmospheric boundary layers and its effect on environmental conditions in the coastal zone. The main focus will be on boundary layer interactions under coastal upwelling conditions, in which cold, upwelled ocean surface water...

The wind-driven overturning circulation of the World Ocean

The wind driven aspects of the meridional overturning circulation of the world ocean and the Conveyor Belt is studied making use of a simple analytical model. The model consists of three reduced gravity layers with an inviscid Sverdrupian interior and a western boundary layer. The net north-south exchange is made possible by setting 5 appropriate western boundary conditions, so that most of the...

Under-ice Boundary Layer

Sea ice is in almost constant motion in response to wind, ocean currents, and forces transmitted within the ice cover itself, thus there is nearly always a zone of sheared Sow between the ice and underlying, undisturbed ocean where turbulence transports momentum, heat, salt, and other contaminants vertically. The zone in which these turbulent Suxes occur, which can span from a few to hundreds o...
